In Southern Manitoba, Hanse Steel Group partnered with Southern Potato co., a family-run farm dedicated to producing high-quality potatoes, to optimize their storage solutions. Southern Potato’s commitment to growing the best possible crop for their customers led them to invest in modern and efficient storage infrastructure. The project aimed to enhance storage capabilities while protecting potatoes from moisture and temperature fluctuations, ensuring long-term quality preservation and meeting market demands.
The primary goal of this project was to optimize potato storage by adapting the facility to local weather conditions. Hanse Steel Group worked closely with Southern Potato to design a facility that addressed both environmental challenges and the specific needs of the farm. The building utilizes high-performance sandwich panels, which feature a PIR core for excellent insulation. These panels are ideal for managing temperature fluctuations, ensuring that the potatoes remain in optimal storage conditions year-round. The same type of panels used in cold stores, they are designed to maintain their insulation properties over time, even after many years of use.
In addition, hot-dip galvanized steel was chosen for the facility’s structure, offering superior protection against moisture—a critical factor in potato storage. This treatment not only protects the steel from rust and corrosion but also enhances the longevity and strength of the construction. The result is a facility that is highly resistant to environmental wear and tear, with minimal need for maintenance, even in damp conditions. The combination of these durable materials makes the facility a sustainable, long-lasting solution for Southern Potato’s storage needs.
Hanse Steel Group worked alongside Canadian experts and technicians to complete the project efficiently. Despite some challenges the project met all performance expectations. The team’s collaboration ensured that the facility was delivered to Southern Potato’s satisfaction, with similar projects also being completed for other local growers, such as Haskett Growers in the same region.
